Biography
Seungmi Ryu is a research fellow in the Stem Cell Translation Laboratory of the Chemical Genomics Branch within NCATS’ Division of Preclinical Innovation, where she develops 3-D models representing the central and peripheral nervous systems from human pluripotent stem cells using bioengineering techniques, such as organoid and tissue bioprinting.
Before joining NCATS, Ryu pursued her postdoctoral training at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School in Boston, where she worked on projects that investigated the effect of local brain mechanical modulus on the differentiation of neural stem cells.
Ryu earned her bachelor’s degree and doctorate in bioengineering from Seoul National University in South Korea, where her research focused on tissue engineering and regenerative medicine with human mesenchymal stem cells.
Research Topics
Ryu’s research goal is to develop living mini-organs that ultimately can be used for developmental studies, disease modelling, and drug discovery.
