NCATS, a major research component of NIH, seeks applications from outstanding candidates to fill a staff scientist position. The opening is in the Stem Cell Translation Laboratory (SCTL) within the Chemical Genomics Branch of the center’s Division of Preclinical Innovation in Rockville, Maryland.

Core Responsibilities

The successful candidate will:

  • Play a key role in leading SCTL projects, using their expertise in tissue engineering, hPSC biology, and next-generation sequencing and development of hPSC-derived 3-D organoid models. These models are key for modeling diseases, discovering drugs and advancing treatments.
  • Design research projects that align with NCATS’ and the SCTL’s strategic plans.
  • Be very creative and work well with teams of people from different fields.
  • Mentor trainees and work closely with a range of partners.
  • Draft papers, publish results in peer-reviewed journals and present findings at scientific meetings.

Qualifications

Applicants should have a doctoral degree (Ph.D. or equivalent) in bioengineering and four or more years of postdoctoral training in the stem cell and tissue engineering fields.

Applicants must have experience in:

  • Working with hPSCs, embryonic stem cells and/or adult stem cells.
  • Investigating stem cell biology.
  • Differentiating stem cells to develop different disease-relevant cell types.
  • Testing small molecules or other methods and using them to advance treatments.

Applicants should have experience as a bioengineer. They should have applied their tissue engineering background to develop hPSC-derived 3-D organoid models. Candidates should have a strong interest in bioengineering and its role in hPSC technologies. Their publication record should reflect this interest.

The selected applicant will:

  • Have excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Be able to interpret, summarize and present scientific results clearly and accurately.
  • Stay current with advances in bioengineering and stem cell biology.
  • Explore and master new technologies and develop new methods.

Salary/Benefits

Salary will be based on qualifications, experience and accomplishments. A full civil service benefits package is available. It includes retirement; health, life and long-term care insurance; and participation in a Thrift Savings Plan (401[k] equivalent).
