Katie Matthews is a grants management specialist in the Grants Management Branch, Grants Section A, within NCATS’ Division of Extramural Activities, where she manages a diverse grant portfolio. She also assists with developing innovative grant arrangements to resolve critical program needs and advises grantees on financial and management oversight of awarded programs. Matthews’ primary focus is to maintain compliance and ensure financial accuracy of awardee reports.

Prior to joining NIH, Matthews served as a grants and contracts manager in the Department of Medicine at Johns Hopkins University (JHU). In that capacity, she worked closely with faculty, staff and leadership, overseeing all departmental research activities. On average, her portfolio consisted of 400 grants totaling more than $150 million in funding per year, ranking among the top departments of medicine in annual funding received from NIH. Additionally, she has served on several JHU School of Medicine (SoM) grant management initiatives, resulting in changes not only throughout the SoM but throughout the entire university.

Matthews earned her Bachelor’s degree in health administration and public policy from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, where she was first introduced to grants management. She continued to pursue her interest in grant and fiscal administration and program planning by obtaining a Master’s degree in human services administration from The University of Baltimore.

Professional Interests

Matthews has a strong interest in playing a key role in advancing medical research through her work in grants management and feels a deep connection to how her role contributes to NCATS’ mission and the advancement of public health.
